The device (1) has an electrical associated ignition module (4) comprising a diagnosis circuitry (8) to detect an ignition spark on a primary side of an ignition coil (7). An engine control equipment comprises a microprocessor (3) with a data port (3.1) that is connected with the ignition module, where the port is switchable for transmission of the signals to the ignition module in an output state and switchable for reception of the signals of the circuitry in an input state, so that burning duration of the ignition spark is determined and stored in a capture/compare register by the port. An independent claim is also included for an ignition control method for a combustion engine.
