The method involves monitoring occurrence of a first controlling signal on an ignition spark plug, and generating a second controlling signal at the ignition spark plug when the first controlling signal is absent. A time window is defined during monitoring the occurrence of the first controlling signal. A third controlling signal of the ignition spark plug is utilized by the defined time window for generating second and/or fourth controlling signals at an angular position of a crankshaft of an internal combustion engine. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a readable data recording medium comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for controlling ignition of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle (2) an ignition system comprising a hardware unit for controlling ignition of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
