Use of 4-carboxy 2-pyrrolidinone derivatives of formula (I) and/or their salts to improve the smoothness and/or spreading property of a cosmetic composition comprising particulate material, on keratinous material and for dispersing the particulate material in a cosmetic composition, is claimed R1 : 1-20C linear alkyl, 3-20C branched alkyl or H; R2 : 5-6C cycloalkyl (optionally substituted by 1 or 2 methyl), 1-20C linear alkyl, 3-20C branched alkyl containing 5-6C ring, phenyl, benzyl or phenethyl; and R3, R4 : 1-12C linear alkyl, 3-12C branched alkyl or H (preferred).
