A method for encoding a sequence of digital images into a bitstream (and decoding therefrom) - with one or several portions of an image encoded by motion compensation (MC) with respect to a reference image portion - comprises the following steps. First, for at least one image portion to encode, a target number of motion information predictors are obtained, S500. And, next, a set of motion information predictors consisting of the target number of motion information predictors is generated; each motion information predictor of the generated set is different from any other motion information predictor of the generated set, i.e. the motion (vector) predictors are diverse and different. Consequently, a variety of a given target number of different motion predictors is used in the encoding method, providing enhanced compression efficiency. The use of a target number of motion predictors makes the encoded bit stream parseable by a decoder, even in the case of transmission losses. Vector predictors may be added or removed (S506) to reach the target. Also claimed is a method for generating a set of motion predictors having controlled diversity, and selecting a motion predictor from the set.
