PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a lithium ion secondary battery negative electrode material, with which a lithium ion secondary battery having high charge/discharge capacity can be obtained and which is easy in handling without being ignited by a reaction with air and water, and has high industrial practicality; and a method for producing the lithium ion secondary battery negative electrode material.SOLUTION: In a lithium-containing silicon oxide powder, when area intensities of peaks at 2=22.1°±0.2°, 28.4°±0.2°, 40.5°±0.2° and 56.2°±0.2° in an X-ray diffraction (XRD) using a Cu-k ray source are denoted as A, B, C and D, respectively, relationships of 0.01B/A5.0, C/A1.0 and D/A1.0 are satisfied.
