The controlling device has a loading force regulator, a force regulator, a load observer and a delay element. A target load force exerted on a load (2) from a hydraulic cylinder unit (1) and an expected actual load force determined by the load observer are fed into the load regulator. The target load force, a piston force (FK) exerted on a mechanical system (6) from the hydraulic cylinder unit and an intrinsic force produced by the mechanical system are fed to the force regulator.
