The invention of the disclosed travel cushion and rest cushion in textile and inflatable form for adults and children is based on many years of medical research by the inventor in the field of human cybernetics. The travel cushion and rest cushion is designed for the seated or half-seated adoption of an inclined rest position (e.g. in an aeroplane, in a coach, in a train, in a car, in a buggy, etc.). The research in this connection led to a completely new medical insight: It was discovered that the head is actually supported not by the atlas, the first cervical vertebra, but by the ring of muscles around the atlas. However, it also follows from this that, with increasing inclination of the cervical spine region while sleeping during travel, most of the increasing shear forces have to be taken up by the atlas muscles alone, and the latter are therefore exposed to a high load. In accordance with this, the disclosed invention provides anatomical relief of the involved muscle groups in an inclined, semi-upright rest position and sleep position. The medical travel cushion and rest cushion for adults and children is designed such that is adapts optimally to these situations. It consists of two cushion parts which are separated, in the ratio of two thirds to one third, by a multiple quilting seam, or in the inflatable variant by a multiple weld seam. The aim of the cushion is to take account of the variability in upright or inclined sleeping positions during travel. The high degree of flexibility that the cushion requires for this purpose is achieved, on the one hand, by the division into cushion chambers and, on the other hand, by the fact that the folding variations of the neck roll can be easily corrected by hand. The cushion is designed in such a way that, when the head is set down on it, the neck roll lifts at the sides and thus supports the jaw region and prevents tilting of the head. The folding variations of the travel cushion and rest cushion allow the deep flexor and extensor muscles in the atlas region to shift between tension and relaxation of the active muscle segments. The therapeutic effect of the travel cushion and rest cushion can additionally be varied by the insertion of an external filler cartridge into the neck roll. In the design for children, the main emphasis from the medical point of view must be on the growth phase, and therefore on the disproportion of the size of the head to the still weak muscles of the neck. Incorrect posture while sleeping in a seated position (car seat, buggy) can result not only in an overstretching of the ligaments of the cervical spine but also in the build-up of asymmetrical muscle tone and the possible formation of scoliosis. Folded up, and additionally placed in an outer cushion sleeve, the cushion converts into an asymmetrical support cushion for the lumbar spine region. The outer cushion sleeve keeps the asymmetry of the folded cushion dimensionally stable.
