A porous ceramic or clay water filter having one or more coatings of elemental or compounds of iron, manganese, aluminum, titanium, or mixtures thereof deposited on the surface of the pores. The metals are applied to the filter by soaking the pre-fired filter in the metal solution. The metals are selected for their antibacterial properties.
