The invention relates to a method for operating a charging connection device (1) for electric vehicles (V), in which electric power is fed from a stationary electricity grid into the charging connection device (1) via at least one first interface (10), and electric power is supplied to an electric vehicle (V) via at least one second interface (12) comprising a receptacle (14) to which and from which a mating plug (P1) including a charging cable (C) to an electric vehicle (V) can be connected and disconnected as needed. A plurality of electrotechnical components (2) in the charging connection device (1) allows the consumed and/or supplied electric power to be switched, measured, and monitored. According to the invention, the charging connection device (1) determines the current carrying capacity of a charging cable (C) connected thereto. The charging connection device (1) interrupts the transmission of power via the charging cable (C) when the current carrying capacity of the charging cable (C) is exceeded. A correspondingly designed charging connection device (1) is also disclosed.
