Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (I) is used to prevent or treat portal hypertension and associated disorders. Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (I) is used to prevent or treat portal hypertension; to prevent or treat hemorrhagic complications of portal hypertension, hepatorenal syndrome, hepatopulmonary syndrome, hepatic encephalopathy, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and ascites; to prevent or treat diseases that can be ameliorated or prevented by lowering portal vein pressure and/or increasing portal vein blood flow; for modulating the metabolism of a substance, where such modulation comprises increasing portal vein blood flow and thus increasing hepatic blood flow. An independent claim is also included for a combination medication for preventing or treating portal hypertension and/or disease states or risks associated with portal hypertension, comprising a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (II) and another agent active against portal hypertension.
