The sharpening device (1) has a receptacle (5), in which a rotary blade (3) and a sharpening tool (9) are fixed. The rotary blade and the sharpening tool are moved relative to each other such that a blade-edge extending on the periphery of the rotary blade is sharpened by the sharpening tool. A measuring device (13) is provided for determining the course of a cutting edge (11). A controller is designed to utilize the determined cutting edge course for controlling the relative movement between the sharpening tool and the rotary blade. An independent claim is provided for a method for sharpening the rotary blades, particularly sickle- or circular blades, particularly for a food products slicing machine.
