A particulate matter sensor (2a) is arranged in downstream of particulate filter (3) in the exhaust line (1) to detect the particulate matter in particulate matter mass flow of particulate filter. The separation degree of particulate filter is computed based on theoretical mass flow and actual mass flow of particulate matters in region of particulate filter. The performance value of particulate filter is determined based on the actual present stress state of exhaust gas after-treatment system of the internal combustion engine, and separation degree of particulate filter.
