The method involves arranging a gas-sensor (80) in an exhaust gas passage in a flow direction of an exhaust gas behind an emission control component serving for nitrogen oxide reduction. A nitrogen oxide concentration in an exhaust gas stream (20) is determined using the passage. An emission control component in comparison to the oxide concentration is closed in the flow direction of the exhaust gas before a particulate filter (40) at serviceability of the filter based on alteration of the concentration according to the control component serving for nitrogen oxide reduction. An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring a particulate filter.
