The toaster (1) has a housing (2), in which a toasting chamber (3) is arranged, and an electronic controller (6) for controlling a roasting process of a roasting material (5), for example a slice of bread. A temperature sensor (7) is provided for detecting the upper surface temperature of the roasting material, where the electronic controller is formed such that it measures a residual roasting and a roasting temperature as a function of the determined upper surface temperature of the roasting material. The temperature sensor is formed as a thermopile or a pyrometer. An independent claim is included for a method for controlling a roasting process of a roasting material, for example a slice of bread, in a toaster.
