The commutator motor (100) has a stationary collector (183) electrically and conductively connected with a motor winding (199). An alternating voltage signal is produced during operation. The brushes (187,197) of motor winding and collector are overlain and supplied with direct voltage supply signal. The alternating and direct voltage supply signals are combined to form a motor voltage signal. A signal control device is used to control motor voltage signal in several operating modes such that motor voltage signal enables unique determination of rotational position of collector. An independent claim is included for method for operating commutator motor.
