The device (1) has two clamping fixtures (3) for holding and positioning two plastic pipes, and water-hydraulically operated control units for joining the plastic pipes after plasticizing the plastic pipes with a heating element (4), where the plastic pipes are welded with one another. A water reservoir is provided for enabling a water-hydraulic circuit for the control units. A base frame (2) supports the heating element, the clamping fixtures and the control units. The base frame has a frame portion provided with a cavity, which is formed as the water reservoir. The control units are formed as a water-hydraulic setting cylinder (6), water hydraulic cylinders (8, 9), a water-hydraulic traversing cylinder (10), a lifting mechanism (12) and swivel- and clamping cylinders (13, 14).
