PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an additive for a positive electrode capable of suppressing oxygen evolution at charging in alkaline cells using nickel hydroxide as a positive electrode.SOLUTION: Provided is a conductive additive for a positive nickel electrode for electrochemical cells which provides increased performance of rechargeable alkaline cells by suppressing an oxygen evolution reaction that occurs in parallel with the oxidation of nickel hydroxide and increasing conductivity of the electrode by adding a metal oxide, especially, doped cerium oxide, and/or consuming oxygen produced as a result of the oxygen evolution reaction.
