As an organic electroluminescent device material having high efficiency and high durability, an organic material having excellent properties of injecting and transporting electrons, having a hole blocking ability, and having high stability in a thin film state. To provide a compound, and further to provide a highly efficient and highly durable organic electroluminescence device using this compound. A substituted bipyridyl group represented by the general formula (1) and a pyridoindole ring structure are connected via a phenylene group, and a pair of electrodes and at least one organic layer sandwiched therebetween In the organic electroluminescence device having the above, the compound is used as a constituent material of at least one organic layer.
