The lithium ion energy storage unit (1) has an electrochemical cell (3) that is arranged with a cell cabinet (2). Endothermic reaction is initiated thermally or mechanically at a temperature of 100-170[deg] C by providing endothermic reaction implementing coolant (11) comprising thermochemical material to the cell cabinet. The coolant is circulated within region of mandrel (12) and electrical contact regions (8,9) at the sides of the cabinet.
