An aspect of embodiments of the invention relates to a method for preventing and/or treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by administration to a subject an effective amount of melanocortin receptor antagonist. Additional embodiments relate to a method for preventing and/or treating PTSD by administration to a subject an effective amount of melanocortin receptor four receptor (MC4R) antagonist. Optionally, the melanocortin receptor antagonist may be administered intranasally.
