The speed controller (100) has input unit (102) via which desired speed of vehicle is inputted. A sensor (104) is located for determining distance ahead in direction of vehicle. A control unit (101) controls the actual airspeed of vehicle on basis of inputted desired speed, and controls determined distance ahead in direction of vehicle. The controller is activated in standstill of motor vehicle, and automatic starting of the vehicle is caused from standstill position within predetermined period of time after activation of the controller. An independent claim is included for a method for operation of the speed controller for motor vehicle.
