The method involves extracting (2) a sample of permeate at a permeate exit end of a permeate line of one of series-connected membrane modules by a test device. The extracted sample is tested to obtain a test result. The test device is withdrawn (5) along the permeate line of the modules upto the exit end of the permeate line of next one of the modules when a test result satisfies a preset condition. A next sample of the permeate at the exit end of the line of next one of the modules is extracted (6) by the test device. The extracted next sample is tested for obtaining a nearest test result. The permeate line is a discharge pipe. The permeate is a filtered water. An independent claim is also included for a test device.
