The method involves detecting interaction of a gamma photon with a scintillation crystal, and generating an electrical signal by photodetectors coupled to the scintillation crystal. The electrical signal is converted into a digital signal having sampling points, and a curve representing the evolution of the electrical signal is determined by interpolation of the sampling points. A leading edge of the curve is discriminated with a digital discriminator, to determine the time at which the curve reaches a threshold, where the interaction time is calculated from a specific equation. An independent claim is also included for a positron emission tomography system.
