The method involves measuring amount of light energy (A) representative of scintillation caused by photoelectric interaction of gamma photon with a scintillator crystal (7) at opposite ends (7a, 7b) of the crystal. Estimates of the position of interaction are determined (B) from the measured amount of light energy. The position is calculated (C) from a weighted average of the estimates, where the position is calculated from an equation comprising parameters representing functions relating the estimates to amount of light energy and weight coefficients for estimates. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device comprising a medium readable by an electronic processing unit and containing instructions to implement a method for calculating a position of interaction of gamma photon with a scintillator crystal in a sensor of a positron emission tomography system (2) a positron emission tomography system.
