The method (100) involves detecting a forthcoming intersection of a vehicle (110), and determining a type of highway on which the vehicle drives (120). Type of the forthcoming intersection is characterized (130) by comparing the forthcoming intersection with a stored standard intersection such that a speed profile is determined (140) by selecting from a list of predetermined speed profiles depending on the highway and intersection types. The speed profile is comprised of an optimal speed profile and a maximum speed profile. The selected profile is weighted according to a conducting profile. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling speed of a vehicle.
