PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle periphery environment recognizing device capable of simplifying constitution and processing of a system.SOLUTION: A vehicle periphery environment recognizing device includes an image photographing unit 3 which photographs an image, an optical unit 5 which extends an image angle of the image at least in one direction and a recognition unit 7 which recognizes an object on the basis of the image photographed by the image photographing unit 3. Therein, the image angle contains (a) an area on the front side or rear side of a vehicle 101 and (b) an area of the lateral side and the lower side of the vehicle 101. As the optical unit, for example, a convex mirror, a cylindrical lens and a combination mirror made by arranging a plurality of flat plane mirrors in non-parallel to one another are cited.
