PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide "a rear lateral side vehicle detection device and a rear lateral side vehicle detection method" capable of suppressing false detection of another vehicle when grouping only a plurality of tires detected from inside a photographed image and detecting the other vehicle.SOLUTION: A rear lateral side vehicle detection device includes: a tire detection part 12 detecting a plurality of tires from inside a photographed image; a relative speed calculation part 15 obtaining a relative speed to a self vehicle about each of the plurality of detected tires; and another vehicle detection part 14 grouping the tires having the same relative speed and detecting another vehicle in a position where the grouping is performed. When the relative speeds obtained about the detected tires are different even when the plurality of tires are detected in comparatively near positions, grouping is not performed, and thus, false recognition of the tire of a different vehicle as the tire of the same vehicle is prevented to suppress false detection such that the other vehicle is detected in a position where it is not originally present.
