PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a polyalkylene glycol-based monomer that is capable of significantly reducing formation of prescribed impurities.SOLUTION: A compound of general formula (1) and a bisulfite compound and/or sulfite compound are reacted in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor to obtain a compound of general formula (2). In the formula, Rrepresents an alkylene group, Rrepresents a CHCHgroup, a CHgroup or a single bond, Rrepresents a hydrogen atom or CHgroup, n represents a number between 1 and 300, SOMrepresents a sulfonic acid (sulfonate) group, and Mrepresents a monovalent cation.
