pDisclosed herein is a novel antiviral compound (dihydroxy propyl oleate) from the ripe seed kernel of an Indian medicinal plant Pongamia Pinnata (Linn.) as the active principle and composition thereof for said novel compound with pharmaceutically acceptable excipients for treating Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) infection. The invention also provides a process for the preparation of Seizt-fileterd and Lyophilized extract at very lower concentration against VZV by Cytopathic inhibition assay./p
