EFFECTS OF KARANJIN, THE SEED EXTRACT OF Pongamia pinnata L. (FAMILY: FABACEAE) ON THE YELLOW FEVER MOSQUITO, Aedes aegypti L. (DIPTERA: CULICEDAE)

Karanjin, a pure compound isolated from the seed of Pongamiapinnata L. (Family: Fabaceae = Leguminaceae) when treated to the eggs, larvae, pupae and adults of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti L., showed significant activity on all the stages.The egg hatchability was affected. The larval mortality and metamorphosis to pupae were hampered. The adult emergence was impaired and there were deformities in the gonads. The opposition rate was reduced considerably. Thus it can be concluded that Karanjin has a profound activity on all the stages of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti L.
