An embodiment of theinvention includes using a set oftelescopes to calibrate a three dimensionaloptical scanner. Three separatecalibrations are disclosed for a survey gradecalibration: (1) angular calibration,im-plemented using at least one anti-podalpair of telescopes, (2) range calibration,implemented using at least onetelescope mounted fiber recirculator, and(3) tilt calibration, implemented using atleast one pair of telescopes not mountedin anti-podal configuration and anintegral tilt table. Methods for aligning ormeasuring the mis-alignment betweenanti-podal telescope pairs are alsodescribed.
