In order to accurately detect the state of an object, such as whether the object is present in the visual field of a sensor, a living organism detector and a power saving mode setting method are provided that: arithmetically calculate a DC output (Sdc) being the DC component of a temperature sensor output value (S) (step S2); obtain, on the basis of same, a fluctuation level indicating whether fluctuation is caused by a passing person or by a user (step S3); when the DC output (Sdc) drops below a DC output threshold (THdc) (step S8), increment an absence determination counter when the fluctuation is not caused by the user or a passing person, and determine an absence when an upper limit is reached (steps S11-S13); reset the absence determination counter when the fluctuation is caused by a passing person or the user (steps S16, S17); and, if the fluctuation is caused by the user, reset the DC output threshold (THdc) on the basis of the DC output (Sdc) at that time (step S18).
