The invention relates to an electric energy storage device (10), in particular a battery device, comprising two electric terminals (16, 18) and at least one current path (20) which electrically connects the two terminals (16, 18) and in which multiple energy storage modules (14) of the energy storage device (10) are connected so as to form a series circuit of said energy storage modules (14). At least one of the energy storage modules (14), in particular each said energy storage module, has multiple storage units (26). The at least one energy storage module (14) has a controllable multi-voltage stage converter (28) for optionally connecting a single or multiple storage unit(s) (26) of the energy storage module in the current path (20) in order to gradually adjust a module voltage dependent on a control signal of a control and/or regulating device of the electric energy storage device (10). The invention additionally relates to a method for increasing the voltage at the terminals (16, 18) of a corresponding energy storage device (10).
