The present invention relates to a walk assist robot and a method for controlling the walk assist robot. The method for controlling a walk assist robot comprises: a ground information obtaining step of obtaining ground information which is information of ground in the waking direction; a control pattern determining step of analyzing the generated ground information, and determining a control pattern of a walk assist robot; and a walk assist robot control step of controlling the walk assist robot based on the determined control pattern.
