The present invention provides a saving box comprising input coin amount detector and a method of operating the saving box, which detects the amount of a coin and the total accumulated amount of coins, displays, as numbers, the amount and the total accumulated amount with sound signals, and, if a predetermined time elapses after the last input of coins, outputs contents to encourage saving in a specified language. The saving box comprises: a body unit which stores a plurality of coins inputted through an inlet in an internal hollow space and draws out the plurality of coins from an opening/closing part; a coin detection unit which is installed in an inner space of the inlet formed at an upper portion of the body unit and detects the size of the coins inputted through the inlet; a saving box control part which receives and analyze the coin size detection signals from the coin detection unit to determine the amount of inputted coins, controls and monitors operations of each functional unit, and supplies operating power thereto; a power generation unit which is installed at a lower end of the coin detection unit and converts potential energy of inputted coins to operating power; and a multimedia input/output unit which, based on a given control signal from the saving box control unit, outputs the amount of an inputted coin, the total accumulated saving amount, encouraging messages, foreign messages, memos and images via multimedia forms, thereby detecting coins of various sizes with simple configurations, reducing time and costs required for manufacturing, easing maintenance to increase preference for consumers, encouraging children to save, and providing early foreign language education to children.
