The present invention relates to the preparation of 3-hydroxyalkanals by reacting two aldehydes in the presence of binary metal nitrides. In a preferred embodiment of the process according to the invention, the reaction of an aldehyde with at least one hydrogen atom on the α-position carbon atom takes place relative to the carbonyl group with formaldehyde.
