An internal combustion engine, an electric machine, and a battery of a vehicle are operated, in certain examples, to segment a predetermined route based on varying criteria to determine battery state-of-charge segment endpoints on the route. The endpoints are an overlay of endpoints that are defined by predicted driveline operating mode transitions, by predicted transients in vehicle acceleration, or by predicted transitions in the roadway gradient on the route.
