In particular, structures and methods for registering images obtained by internal (eg, intravascular) ultrasound devices are disclosed. An apparatus is provided having a rotating ultrasonic beam, wherein the wall of the apparatus is anisotropic in the ultrasonic path. As an example, an ultrasonically opaque cable is attached along the wall of the device so that the ultrasonic beam at the location of the cable is blocked, reflected or scattered. As another example, a thin film of metallic material is placed on or in the wall so that a portion of the beam can be blocked or attenuated. The imaging system recognizes changes to the signal caused by the anisotropic wall and registers a continuous image according to those changes.
