PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a position of an insertion to be checked on a photoacoustic image even when the insertion is inserted into a deep position of a subject, or inserted almost at a right angle.SOLUTION: An insertion is a hollow puncture needle 15 having an opening at the tip, for example. The puncture needle 15 includes a light guide member 152 for guiding the light emitted from a first light source to the vicinity of the opening, and a light emission part 153 provided in the vicinity of the opening for emitting the light guided by the light guide member 152. In the puncture needle 15, a first photoacoustic wave attributed to the light emitted from the light emission part 153 is generated. After the puncture needle is inserted into a subject, the first photoacoustic wave is detected, and a first photoacoustic image is created based on the first photoacoustic wave.
