METHOD FOR TREATING DOMESTIC WASTEWATERS USING ORNAMENTAL PLANTS.

The present invention relates to a novel method for treating reduced flows of domestic wastewaters, which consists in a wetland of the horizontal flow subsurface type having valuable ornamental plants. Besides the benefit provided by the wastewater treatment, the flowers harvesting offers a rentable business through the production of commercial flowers that comply with the requirements of biological safety and innocuousness so that they may be commercialized. Described herein are the results achieved in five species of ornamental plants. Different parameters of the water quality were assessed at the inlet and outlet of the system at a laboratory scale. The COD was reduced more than 75% in the whole cases; the BOD and nitrate were removed in more than 70%; phosphorus was reduced in more than 66% and the dissolved oxygen increased from 0.175 mg/l to 5.8 mg/l. The total and fecal coliforms were removed in more than 99.3%. The results showed the viability of the method to turn the product ion of ornamental flowers compatible with the treatment of domestic wastewaters.
