Compositions and methods for creating plants exhibiting enhanced resistance to abiotic stresses, especially cold stress are disclosed. Specifically, the disclosure provides methods for producing modified higher plants which comprise elevated levels of at least Ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) small subunit (SS) protein and Rubisco Accumulation Factor1 (RAF1) when compared to wild type plants. More specifically, the transgenic plants comprise heterologous nucleic acids encoding SS, RAF1, Rubisco large subunit (LS) protein, and Bundle Sheath Defective 2 (BSD2).
