The invention relates to a safety device (1) for a domestic appliance having a refrigerant circuit (2) containing a refrigerant that can be ignited, characterized by at least one apparatus (3) for sensing an escape of refrigerant from the refrigerant circuit (2) and for introducing a safety gas (4) that cannot be ignited or is difficult to ignite into the immediate surroundings (5) of the refrigerant circuit (2) when an escape of refrigerant from the refrigerant circuit (2) is sensed.
