The invention relates to an apparatus and method for capturing and utilising carbon dioxide emitted by industrial chimneys to produce barium carbonate from ammonium carbonate solutions from ammonium absorption towers. According to the present invention, in particular, the ammonia absorption tower captures carbon dioxide emitted by industrial chimneys, wherein carbon dioxide is entrained by the liquid stream in the form of ammonium carbonate, and is precipitated by reaction with barium chloride, generating solid barium carbonate. The object and aim of the present invention is the utilisation of gases emitted by industrial plants to produce useful by-products, such as barium carbonate, in the form of a solution, thus preventing gaseous emisssions and the resulting pollution or contamination of the atmosphere.
