The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition comprising a water-soluble extract of Saururus chinensis BAILL. as an active ingredient for preventing or treating inflammatory bowel diseases. According to the present invention, a water-soluble extract of Saururus chinensis BAILL. can be usefully used as a composition for preventing or treating inflammatory bowel diseases, with excellent activation of reducing or inhibiting activities of inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α), and with excellent effects in reducing nitric oxide (NO) without effects on cell viability.
