The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for recognizing a device by analyzing a power consumption pattern. Provided is an apparatus for measuring power consumption of a device used at home or in an office including several sorts of electronic devices such as a refrigerator, a computer, a washing device and TV, and lighting devices. A database is constructed by analyzing the power consumption pattern through information collected by the device for measuring power consumption, so a power consumption pattern for a particular device is registered. Moreover, when power consumption about an optional device is measured, the properties of a product including kinds, models, production companies and normal power consumption amounts of corresponding devices or combinations thereof may be recognized based on a conventionally constructed database.
