The subject matter of the invention described herein relates to a file system placeholder. In some ways, placeholders can be used by the client to represent remote file system objects. The place holder may contain metadata and may or may not include all or part of the content of the represented remote file system object. Based on the place holder and on one or more factors, the client may hydrate or dehydrate the client's file system object to follow the user's instructions, the inferred user intent, and the client's storage policy.
