The present invention relates to a process for reducing the amount of zinc and lead in starting materials comprising iron and more particularly to a process for reducing the amount of zinc and lead in starting materials in one or more reactors at a temperature equal to or greater than 35 캜 and a pH comprised between 0.5 and 3.5 Selectively leaching zinc and lead contained in the starting material by mixing the material with an oxidizing agent comprising hydrochloric acid and at least 5% by weight of manganese dioxide (step a); Filtering the resulting mixture to separate the solid phase and the filtrate (step b); Washing said solid phase with water to obtain a solid phase comprising mainly iron (Fe) and a reduced amount of zinc and lead compared to the initial starting material (step c); Recovering the filtrate of step b and the wash water of step c comprising step (d) comprising chloride and zinc and lead dissolved in one or more reactors; (Step e) of precipitating zinc and lead dissolved in the recovered filtrate and washing solution by mixing with a neutralizing agent; (Step f) of filtering and washing the solid residue obtained from step e) to remove chloride in the solution from the solid residue comprising at least lead or zinc. The present invention also relates to the use of materials obtained after treatment in an electrical arc furnace (EAF), a cupola furnace, an oxycup furnace, a submerged arc furnace, a plasma furnace or a rotary furnace rotary hearth furnace), in blast furnaces, or in all pyrometallurgical furnaces.
