An inductive and alignment system for a wireless charging system to help align an inductive power transfer (IPT) coupler of a transmitter and receiver is disclosed. These systems guide the positioning and alignment to provide sufficient coupling between the transmitter and receiver IPT couplers. An exemplary system provides a magnetic field sensor, a magnetic field generator, and magnetic vectoring to determine the location of an electric vehicle or wireless charging base. In a magnetic vectoring system, an alignment system that includes at least three coils (or similar circuitry) on a permeable substrate receives a positioning magnetic field that includes a modulated information signal and positions the positioning magnetic field source relative to the magnetic field sensor position. The received signal is processed to produce an output for determination. The alignment system may further comprise a similar structure that generates a positioning magnetic field that may include a modulated information signal based on the input signal.
