The present invention relates to a valve device (1) for controlling the flow of a damping medium in a shock absorber. The present invention allows conventional radial or angled failsafe flow to affect the axial position of the control valve member by increasing friction due to direct axial force and radial force acting on the control valve member. It is based on the insight of generating turbulent flow. Instead of applying an axial fail-safe flow (20) to the radial column (18), the fail-safe flow (20) is a precise axial position of the control valve member (5) for generating a fail-safe restriction. The turbulent flow that affects the axial position of the control valve member (5) is reduced. Thereby, an improved valve device (1) is provided which has a more stable and reliable fail-safe operation and results in a more reliable valve device (1).
