A composition for forming a coating that adheres at least partially to the outer surface of a zirconium alloy cladding for a light water reactor and a method for dynamically depositing the composition. The coating composition includes a first component and a second component. The first component is selected from the group consisting of zirconium, zirconium oxide, and mixtures thereof. The second component is a group consisting of Zr2AlC ceramic, Ti2AlC ceramic, Ti3AlC2 ceramic, Al2O3, aluminum, zirconium silicide, amorphous and quasi-amorphous stainless alloy steel, and a mixture of Zr2AlC ceramic, Ti2AlC ceramic and Ti3AlC2 ceramic More selected. The coating has the first component such that the weight percentage of the first component decreases and the weight percentage of the second component increases from the outer surface of the cladding tube to the externally exposed surface of the coating. And having a composition in which the weight percentage of the second component gradually changes from the outer surface of the cladding tube toward the externally exposed surface of the coating.
